Mixed Use Sector Case Study:
Howard Town Mill,
Glossop
Client: B & R Developments Ltd
Cost: Approx £8.5m

"This high quality development is a
fusion of traditional craftmanship and
contemporary cutting edge design"
B & R Developments

Objectives

The main objective was to re-develop one of the
last remaining mills within the heart of Glossop to
help revitalise the market town. Incorporating two
Grade II Listed gatehouses, the mill is adjacent to
Glossop Brook with dramatic views of the Peak
District.

The brief was to create a mixed use scheme with
residential, retail, restaurant and office
accommodation.There was scope for some
refurbishment combined with new build.

Our View
Overall we were keen to create a development
which could incorporate as much of the existing
character as possible and contrast this with
contemporary styling and architecture.We worked
very closely with the Planning and Conservation
Officers, being mindful of sensitive planning issues.
This had the added benefit of securing significant
grant monies.

We made the bold recommendation that the
central structure be removed to make room for
a dramatic lightwell and that a new floor of
residential accommodation be developed in
contemporary style.
We designed large openings at ground floor level in
the mill to create a modern retail environment and
specified two new build units in a sympathetic style.

The Results
This project is a catalyst for the regeneration of a
further 13 acres of land along Glossop Brook.
