Global Perspective on Design for Older People
14 February 2011
We recently brought together a recognised and influential group of International experts on designing for older people for a one day conference.
On a theme of ‘What should care providers include in their built environments for the future?’ the panel discussed their favourite schemes, the challenges these projects encountered and the rewards they now enjoy.
Emi Kiyota (Japan) described her Gojikara project with an emotional link to her grandmother. She let us know that imperfections are part of everyday life and should be accepted. Monique Wijnties (The Netherlands) spoke about Hogeweyk, a community for 152 people with Dementia, and its interactions between residents and the wider community. Jeffrey Anderzhon (USA) highlighted their ‘Household’ concept whilst Stephen Judd (Australia) showcased Hammond Care’s flagship village Hammondville. Christa Monkhouse (Switzerland) emphasised the importance of the built form in relation to both residents and staff, and David Hughes (Pozzoni Architects UK) concluded with a tour of Sandford Village, Somerset, an outstanding Continuing Care Retirement Community.
Over 100 people travelled from as far as Cornwall and Scotland to the National Motorcycle Museum, near Birmingham, to applaud the group as they shared these valuable and inspiring insights into current working practises around the world. Alongside this, cost, investment and environmental aspects were also highlighted.
Chaired by Des Kelly OBE, the event brought into focus how design for older people is influenced by different cultures; how common themes prevail; and how we could apply these lessons in the UK.
Delegates described the day as a “great opportunity to hear what is going on in different countries, lessons to be learnt and good practice to consider”.
The Conference was sponsored by ourselves, Davis Langdon, GB Building Solutions and Blue Sky Global Investors.
