Pozzoni 'Learning Shed' is Top of the Class!
14 September 2010
Pozzoni’s classroom extension to Saighton CE Primary School has earned top marks from pupils and staff, and has now been encouraged to enter the Chester Civic Trust Award by local planners.
This is recognition that the Pozzoni Education Team had really done their homework on the project and responded to challenging conservation and planning demands for a design that reflected the rural setting but also brought some contemporary innovation to the Grade II listed building.
Using local farm buildings and communities as inspiration for both materials and technical detailing, the new classroom embraces vertical timber cladding, a zinc roof and the use of overhangs to eliminate blinds and encourage natural light.
An extended external wooden platform and wide doors help to link the extension to the existing playground and provides a really popular outdoor learning, play and performance area.
A dramatic and focal stain glass window, designed by pupils and made by one of the parents, represents the strong environmental theme of the project and captures the way in which the architect team, the pupils, staff and local community were all involved in making this “learning shed” something really special.
The building was opened by the Duke of Westminster in June 2010, who expressed his liking of the new addition in his estate.
