Refurbished Queens Park Leisure Centre gets healthy response from local people
02 December 2010
Local people in St Helens flooded into the Pozzoni designed Queens Park Leisure Centre when it was officially opened on November 1st. Having planned for 400 new members, the Council’s Leisure Team were overwhelmed by interest in the refurbished facilities, with over 1000 people queuing out of the redesigned reception area to sign up.
The centre has a new five lane 25 m swimming pool at the heart of the development, with dry and wet changing rooms, a health suite, fitness facility, a refurbished sports hall and a community meeting room. The under used squash courts were reconfigured to make way for a welcoming new entrance and extended fitness space, plus a multi purpose activity room.
Pozzoni brought their substantial leisure sector experience to the design, combining refurbishment, new build and interior design resources to respond to the individual demands of the project. The results are so positive that the internal finishes have become a template for St Helens Council in other Leisure schemes and Council facilities, including the Town Hall.
Stuart Goodwin from Pozzoni shared their enthusiasm for the scheme and the finished project, “This is a really rewarding development which has managed to provide a wonderful range of modern sport, leisure and community facilities on one site. The exterior is exciting, with a mixture of render, brickwork and substantial areas of glazing to maximise natural levels – plus we’ve designed in splashes of “St Helens Red” to the colour scheme to give it a local feel”.
Pozzoni’s long established partnership with ISG and our combined experience of working positively together on previous leisure new builds and refurbishments clearly brought our collective enthusiasm to the St Helens project and we are looking forward to completing another quality job with ISG and the Council.
