Brindley Building, Staffordshire University
The Brindley Building is located on the eastern side of the University's Stoke campus. It was constructed in 1975 and now totals some 9,000 square metres of space.
The project involves the initial phase of the building's overall refurbishment and will provide a completely revised access solution and new public face and use at ground floor.
The building is 120 metres in length and runs along an axis of future development proposed within the universitys's emerging masterplan. Our design therefore responds with the creation of a new main entrance to the prominent end gable, at the turning point of the masterplan, together with a secondary entrance and lift core half-way along the building's length. These solutions address the intrinsic difficulties of the long floor plan. A new student hub and catering faciltiy is to be provided, for which the existing insular elevational treatment is to be opened-up with extensive new glazing.
These works will enable the subsequent later phased provision of improved and space efficient accommodation for:
- Business School
- Faculty of Health
- Central Teaching
- plus other departmental uses
The £1.8m project will be completed on site by December 2012, to a tight programme using traditional procurement. It will deliver a strong architectural strategu which works with the constraints of the existing building, using modern materials to create a striking, affordable and functional transformation.
