Henrion Building, Staffordshire University
The Henrion Building is located on the western side of the University's Stoke campus. It was constructed in 1961 as the College of Art and now totals some 5,000 square metres of academic space.
The building sits awkwardly along the principal external pedestrian route between the two halves of the university's campus and acts to divert the route. In order to improve access across the campus, the project provides a new internal route through the Henrion building. To achieve this, departmental space is relocated into alternative accommodation and a new internal 'street' through the Henrion building is created by opening-up the floor plan and creating new entrance facades. In doing so, the internal route then has dual use as an Art display and gallery space and a new retail unit enhances the offering.
The £400,000 project also benefits from improvements to the architectural impact on the main approaches from College Road and Leek Road, carefully co-ordinated with the landscape masterplan.
The project will be completed on site by September 2012, to a tight programme using traditional procurement. It will deliver a strong architectural strategy which works with the constraints of the existing building, using modern materials to create a striking, affordable and functional transformation.
