Godalming Leisure Centre, Waverley

Award winning new-build leisure facility, achieving BREEAM ‘very good’.

Project
Godalming Leisure Centre was an existing leisure situated to the rear of a parkland site within the greenbelt. The Council’s brief was to construct a new, modern facility to the front of the site, replacing the old facility.

The Pozzoni leisure team has designed a new wet and dry leisure facility, creating a spectacular, sculptural building to meet the current and future demands of the local community.

Building design
The building has been kept intentionally low and set back from the road in response to the low level residential properties opposite, with the two-storey elements pushed to the back of the facility. Full height glazing to the pool hall, entrance and first floor fitness suite provides the centre with active frontage, clearly stating the centre’s purpose.

Materials such as oxidized copper, timber, local stock brickwork and render give a sense of confidence and maturity which emphasizes the sculptural forms and help to further break down scale.

Sustainability features
As well as appropriately orientating the building and, where possible, using recyclable and highly insulated building fabric elements, sustainable features also include photovoltaic cells and biomass boiler.

Facilities
Internally, the centre boasts:

  • a 6 lane 25m pool
  • learner pool
  • unisex wet changing village
  • 60 station fitness suite
  • dance studio
  • members dry changing rooms
  • cafe & seating area.

The centre opened to the public on July 30th 2012.

Godalming Leisure Centre has won the Civic Design Awards 2012 from the Godalming Trust for 'New build public facilities', and 'Best of the Best' category. It is also shortlisted in the LABC Building Excellence Awards in both 'Best Community Building' category and 'Best Sustainable Project' category.
