BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment

Currently, there is not an environmental assessment method specifically designed for refurbishment projects so EcoHomes continues to be used for this. However, the BRE is in the process of developing a new standard called BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment to meet this need for specific criterion against which such schemes can properly be assessed.

Pozzoni have been selected by the BRE to pilot the new BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment tool and we have been assisting them in the development of this new standard since September 2009.

Cornbrook Court is a former 1970’s Local Authority traditional “H” shaped care home which is now vacant and in poor condition. Pozzoni have been appointed to undertake the refurbishment design with a focus on energy efficiency. The new scheme provides modern self contained flats for homeless people with an emphasis on building self esteem and is designed to achieve EcoHomes Very Good.

With a central courtyard, communal lounge, training facilities and reception area designed to balance independence and security, the building will benefit from new energy efficient heating and high levels of insulation in response to the challenges of delivering sustainably refurbished buildings. Timber cladding and render finishes will give the building a new identity and act as a catalyst for further regeneration within the area.

As we are assessing this project to the current EcoHomes 2006 and the new BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment criteria we will be collaborating with the BRE to publish details about how the two methods compare.
