Halving Waste to Landfill

The Government’s Waste and Resource Action Programme (WRAP) is concerned with reducing waste across all industries. Their ‘Halving Waste to Landfill’ initiative is about helping construction companies minimise their construction waste.

Pozzoni was one of the first architectural practices to sign up to ‘HW2L’ campaign having been involved since 2009. The intent is simple - 'We commit to playing our part in halving the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste going to landfill by 2012. We will work to adopt and implement standards for good practice in reducing waste, recycling more, and increasing the use of recycled and recovered materials.'

We have access to several online tools created by WRAP such as the ‘Recycled Content’ tool which we implemented on a leisure centre refurbishment in St Helens. A planning condition stipulated 10% recycled content in the materials used and the RC Tool enabled us to measure this, see the impact of any changes made to the specification which resulted in 14% RC being achieved.

We have also held design stage 'Designing out Waste' workshops on live projects to appraise opportunities to reuse/reclaim materials on site, reduce the amount of new materials and consider those with higher levels of recycled content.
